Sign of the Times

People will check in to your home for all various reasons. Usually you can categorize the reason according to one of two categories – business or pleasure. Depending on what city your home share is in as well as the location of the part of town you offer a room for rent in, this can great influence whether your guests’ trips are for business or pleasure.

In my case, I would say the ratio is an even split. Being that I am in a very popular beach town I get many travelers coming to see the famous beach. However, the events that are held throughout the year are very specific and do not go year round. The influx of tourists definitely has an ebb and flow. In my particular beach town, many blue collar workers also stay for various types of jobs that are available. These working guests work gigs for various periods of time.

Surprising Position

A guest came during a popular weekend event so at first glance one could think that he was here to explore the festivities going on over the weekend. However, when he arrived I entered into conversation with him about what had brought him over. His answer was definitely an answer I had not expected! He had driven 70 miles from a metropolitan city to come and provide extra security support for the movie “The Joker”.

This movie was released prior to Halloween and was causing some controversy due to the character portrayal. There were major concerns this particular movie would encourage more mass shootings like the terrifying experience that movie goers in Aurora Colorado experienced while watching The Dark Knight Rises. As stated within this Newsweek article, movie theatres around the country surged their regular staff as well as hired additional security support.

Movie Security? Here? Now?

Wow. The Joker had already been in theaters for a full week earlier! Scary thought that security is now needed for movies, but I would not have imagined that security would be necessary beyond opening night. He had driven 70+ miles here for this job as if there was no one local to handle such instances. Surprised that this quaint little beach town would need this extra backup and even more surprised that there weren’t enough locals that could do the job.

Furthermore, this town I am in is made up mostly of senior citizens. Some are local and some are snow birds. Not exactly a place that would be a suspected target of such activity. Still the city and the movie theatre feel it is necessary to have security so I suppose that is the sign of the times. I’m glad and I’m sad. Shootings continue to become more and more prevalent. It seems in most recent years the activity has really stepped up. Boy oh boy are we in a fast moving train. Never thought I’d see the day when establishments would find it necessary to arm mostly senior citizen venues.
